Ekaterinburg presents logo for 2023 FISU World University Games

22 September 2020

Ekat LogoThe Organising Committee of the Ekaterinburg 2023 FISU World University Games unveiled the much-awaited logo for the multi-sport summer spectacle to be held three years from now.

The logo was revealed at the Ural Music Night festival and constantly adapted to the music genre on stage, with musicians performing pop music, indie rock and rap styles.

Thus, the Ekaterinburg 2023 does not have a static emblem, but in fact a ‘live image’ that changes depending on the context. The image changes by colour and other sets of elements.

The place and time for the reveal were carefully chosen, as the Ural Music Night, much like the FISU World University Games, is an event that brings together a wide variety of people, mainly youth and students.

The Kazan-based ‘Lorien’ agency won the bid ahead of 23 competitors, and developed the unique logo. The designers were faced with the task of creating an emblem that will be in demand in three years’ time – at the time of the Games, when digital technology would surely have advanced.

As a result, the logo combines simple geometric shapes, minimalism, constructivism and modern animation. The basis of the logo is the Latin letter ‘U’, which represents FISU and unites all the emblems of the FISU World University Games. It is complemented by elements that reflect the values of competition and the energy of the participants.

“Recently, we updated the name of our flagship competition: instead of the Universiade, we now have the World University Games. And now the logo of the Games in Ekaterinburg is ready. Technology is developing rapidly, and this logo is a tribute to the spirit of the times. A special reason to be proud that Russian designers developed such a bold digital logo,” said FISU President and Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation, Oleg Matytsin.

The sport pictograms for the 2023 Games do away with the silhouette of an athlete and directly represent the sport. For example, the image of the shuttlecock symbolises badminton, the rings on the background of the platform are for artistic gymnastics, and the curves of the running tracks symbolise athletics. Moreover, each new pictogram comprises elements of the main emblem of the tournament – simple geometric shapes.

The FISU World University Games in the summer of 2023 will be held in Ekaterinburg from August 8 – 19, 2023.
