Some four months before the start of Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games, FISU proceeded today to the team draw at the Mumian Hotel in Sichuan Province’s capital. The draw concluded a three-day Heads of Delegations meeting.
The draw involved three sports (men and women): Basketball, Volleyball and Water Polo.
Postponed in 2021 and 2022, the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games will now take place from 28 July to 8 August.
Jing Zhao, FISU Games Summer Director, led the event, under the supervision of Ulf Ohrman and Nikolaos Vasileiou, representing the FISU Technical Committee as Chairs for Basketball and Water Polo, respectively, and in presence of FISU Acting President Leonz Eder and FISU Secretary General and CEO Éric Saintrond.
Basketball and Volleyball teams were allocated to four pools, Water Polo (men) teams divided in two pools and all Water Polo (women) teams placed in only one.
The teams were seeded based on their FISU ranking, which is established according to results of previous FISU events, and with the IF support.
In addition, no more than three countries from the same continent could be placed in the same pool.
Once drawn in their respective pools, teams were seeded inside each pool through an additional draw, to ensure more random initial games.
