3 June 2020

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) expresses its grief on learning of the passing of European Olympic Committees (EOC) President and International Ski Federation (FIS) Vice President Janez Kocijančič, at the age of 78.

“On behalf of the international university sports movement, please accept our sincere condolences,” wrote FISU President Oleg Matytsin in a letter to the European Olympic Committees. “Janez dedicated so much of his life to sports, and he was an inspirational figure to us. May we all be so fortunate as to have such a positive impact on the lives of so many.”

“I know that Janez was a dedicated member of the EOC, and that as a key member of your close sporting family, he will be greatly missed,” wrote Matytsin. “Please know that we stand with you at this time.”

Janez Kocijančič was the first president of Slovenia’s Olympic Committee upon independence in 1991 for 23 years, and a council member of the International Ski Federation (FIS) since 1981, where he was elected FIS Vice-President in 2010.

The entire FISU family expresses its sympathies to Janez Kocijančič’s family and also his European Olympic Committees family.
