12 December 2018

MOSCOW – Even as Russia is preparing to be in the global spotlight in just over two months from now, with the Krasnoyarsk 2019 Winter Universiade opening on 2 March, their robust university sports movement continues to march ahead.

The Russian Students Sport Union (RSSU) recently celebrated its 25thanniversary, with the full support of the Moscow Government.

The annual ‘University Sports Stars’ gala was organized for a sixth year in succession, to honour the best student athletes and universities as well as public and commercial organisations who make a great contribution to the development of student sports in Russia.

Such is the support from the government of the Russian federation that the first ever RSSU ‘University Sports Stars’ gala was held at the State Kremlin Palace in November 2013, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Russian Student Sports Union.

This event was the beginning of a good tradition to celebrate best sporting achievements of the year, among students.

This time too, the opening ceremony was attended by many dignitaries including the Secretary of the Council for Physical Education and Sports Alexei Kulakovsky, FISU President Oleg Matytsin, President of RSSU Sergey Seyranov, Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Igor Sidorkevich as well as five-time Olympic champion Anastasia Davydova who is the Secretary General of the Russian Olympic Committee.

The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin also sent his greetings to the participants and guests of the gala, during which special prizes were awarded to 27 winners for their achievements and contribution to university sports.
