2009 National Universiade in Mongolia

This year Mongolian Student Sports Federation is organizing the 9th “National Universiade” Sports Games among students in 18 disciplines following the Mongolian Government Resolution #197 dated May 28, 2008. The

Organizing Committee of the “National Universiade 2009”, approved by the Minister of Health is composed of 16 members led by Mrs. Tsolmon, Vice-Minister of Health. The organizing committee also involves representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, State Committee of Sports and Physical Culture and presidents of several universities and institutes and Mongolian student sports federation.

By far 5 sport events of the National Universiade such as speed skating, cross country skiing, table tennis, judo, and boxing have been successfully completed involving around 240 student-athletes from 25 universities and colleges in judo competition and 102 student-athletes from 23 universities and other colleges in the boxing competition. The best athletes selected from these competitions shall participate in the International and Asian Championships of 2009.

The best athletes of the 2009 edition of the National Universiade are Mr. Uuganbaatar a student of the National University of Education who has broken the national records 4 times in men’s speed skating, distances 500m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m as well as Mrs. Urgaatsetseg who has broken the national records 2 times in women’s in speed skating, distance 500m and 1000m during the 24th Winter Universiade held in Harbin, China from 18-28 February.

The winners of the judo competition of this “2009 National Universaide”, 14 athletes in total (7 men and 7 women) are selected to participate at the 25th Summer Universiade to be held in Serbia, Belgrade from 1-12 July, 2009. In the previous Summer Universiade in 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand, Mongolian judo athlete Ms. Bundmaa won the gold medal in the 52 kg-category.

The athletes who participated in the “National Universiade 2009” boxing tournament with the best results will participate in the 4th World University Boxing Championship, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 4-11 October, 2010.

The football team which won the gold medal at “National Universiade 2009” Games will go to Wuhan city, China next month (07-15 May 2009) to participate in the 2nd Asian University Football Championship.

So far, 13 sport events (aerobics, athletics, basketball, chess, handball, football, tug of war, sports dance, sports hiking, shooting, volleyball, woodball, and wrestling) are remaining and will be organized in April and May while the closing ceremony is on 17th May, 2009.

The Mongolian Student Sports Federation takes a series of measures to prepare and train its athletes to participate in the 25th Summer Universiade Games in Belgrade this July 2009, Asian University Sports Championships and World University Sports Championship in 2010. The Mongolian delegation to the Belgrade Universiade will participate in 5 sports (judo, taekwondo, women’s volleyball, archery and tennis) and will consist of 55 persons.
