Spain (W) and Romania (M) claim Gold at 23rd FISU WUC Handball

The 23rd edition of the FISU World University Handball Championship in Malaga, Spain came to an end ons Sunday 3 July with Spain (W) and Romania (M) winning the championship’s title in the respective categories.

The women’s final between Romania and Spain resulted in an intense match. Both teams played a hard fought game, but the Spanish ‘guerreras’ had the tactics on their side, together with a strong physical play and the support of their fans. The top scorer from Spain, Amaya G. Garibay, scored six goals. The first half ended with 7-10 in favour of Spain. In the second half the Spanish team proved unstoppable and got 10 more goals ending the match with 14-20, a great victory for host Spain.

In the men’s final Romania faced-off against Korea. At the start of the game, the Romanian team imposed their physical game, but the Koreans soon geared up and displayed their finer technique. The tension between both teams intensified, and at the end of the first half, the scoreboard showed a 16-10 score. The second half had the same intensity, with a score that ended 28-20 in favour of Romania crowning itself as the new World University Handball Champion of the men’s tournament.

During the Closing Ceremony the FISU flag was handed over to Toni Batinic, who represented the Organising Committee which will host the next FISU World University Handball Championship. The 24th edition of the WUC Handball will take place in Rijeka, Croatia in 2018.

17 teams (9 M & 8 W) from 12 countries participated in the 2016 event. The men’s semi-finals and finals and the women’s Finals were broadcast on Eurosport.
