Koreans dominate 11th FISU WUC Archery

Last weekend, the 11th edition of the FISU World University Archery Championship came to an end. The event was hosted in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia from 1 to 5 June. 166 student-archers (87 men & 79 women) representing 23 countries participated in the event. Athletes from 10 countries shared the medal podium. The top five countries are: 1. Korea (8G-1S), 2. Russia (1G-2S-3B), 3. Chinese Taipei (3S-1B), 4. USA (3B), 5. Turkey (2S) & France (1S-1B); trailed by India (1G), Belgium (1S), Malaysia (1B) and Japan (1B).

The Koreans dominated eight disciplines out of ten. Gold in recurve women went to KANG Chae Young (KOR). Gold in compound men and women went to KIM Jongho (KOR) and KO Soyoung (KOR). In the recurve team competitions, the Koreans took the gold in all three categories: men’s, women’s and mixed. In the compound team competitions they also won gold in the mixed team and the men’s team. Only in recurve men and women’s compound team the Korean archers were bested by Galsan Bazarzhapov (RUS) and Team India respectively.

Worth noticing is the fact, that this 11th edition of the World University Archery Championship was the last one. In the future, archery will feature as a compulsory sport on the programme of the Summer Universiade.
