Germany (M) and USA (W) pocket Gold at 7th FISU World University Beach Volleyball Championship

Beach volleyball duos Holler / Schröder (M-GER1) and Tiegs / Pardon (W-USA1) showed themselves to be the best on the sand pitch yesterday, 27 July at the finals of the 7th FISU World University Beach Volleyball Championship in Porto, Portugal, pocketing the gold medal in the men’s and women’s tournament respectively.

The final day of the 7th WUC Beach Volleyball started with the last two games of the men’s quarterfinals with a lot at stake. The duo Bastos / Lazzari (BRA1) and Kosiak / Rudol (POL1) won against the German teams in two very tight games, with the final result of 2-1.

Afterwards, the women’s semi-finals were played, with the German duo Behrens / Seyfferth (GER1) wining 2-0 against the Spanish Gutierrez / Herrero (ESP). In the following game, the number one duo from USA (Tiegs / Pardon) won against Solvoll / Lunde (NOR1) by 2-1 and assured their place in the final.

Already at the men’s semi-finals, there were two matches with fantastic teams, all deserving to be finalists. However, only two get to be there and Holler / Schröder (GER1) and Kosiak / Rudol (POL1) succeeded with wins over BRA1 2-0 and Dressler / Kunert (AUT) 2-1, respectively.

Before the most awaited games of the day, the 3rd and 4th places’ games of both genders were played. The Spanish female pair reached the last podium spot, beating NOR1 with the result 2-0. On the men’s side, the Austrians won against BRA1 achieving the bronze medal.

Getting to the finals, the expectations of the game’s intensity were high and the teams did not let down. With a full stadium, the audience was presented with astonishing performances in both games. In the end, the results dictated that the men’s GER1, beating Polish duo by 2-0, and the women’s USA1, who won against the German team by 2-0, would be the 7th WUC Beach Volleyball Champions!

The next (8th) WUC Beach Volleyball will take place in Pärnu, Estonia in 2016.
