YouRef project continues to shape the future of sports officiating

25 March 2025

With its vibrant new logo and its multiple declinations, the Erasmus + Sport project is moving forward with confidence.

In December 2024, the YouRef Erasmus + Sport project kicked off at the International University Sports Federation’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Three months later, it is time for an update, as the consortium met online with all partners mid-March. A study to evaluate the current situation of young people in sports officiating was launched.  Part of the project’s working packages, this will help determine the motivations of sports officiating among young people and how to engage them more.

The consortium met online on 13 March with all partners.

    The project’s overall goals

If you haven’t yet heard of the project, here’s a quick reminder: the YouRef Erasmus+ Sport project aims to connect secondary schools, universities, and local sports clubs by training young individuals in sports officiating to ensure the longevity of sports officiating across Europe and worldwide. It focuses on developing both technical and essential soft skills to prepare students for officiating by enhancing the development of life skills, capacity building, and employability. Over 24 months, the project consortium will assess student involvement in officiating, create a framework for collaboration between schools and sports organisations, and launch a pilot programme to test the framework locally.

Creation and approval of YouRef logo

An important part of this project’s development is the creation of a logo. The consortium decided that it needed to emphasise the dynamism of youth along with a nod to sports officiating.

FISU enlisted the help of a Healthy Campus Platinum Certified Hungarian university to design the logo: Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, a participant to the programme since April 2024.

Ábel Djogni, Project and Design Manager and Dorottya Nagy, Graphic Designer describe the logo creation process they went through:
“Throughout the design process, we placed a strong emphasis on the visual preferences of the young target audience and their connection to brand identity. Our goal was to create a dynamic, contemporary, and highly recognisable logotype that stands out with its visual rhythm and distinctive appearance. This brandmark is not only an aesthetic element but also serves as a strong point of brand identification, allowing the young audience to embrace it with pride whether on sports apparel or as part of everyday fashion.”

The result of their creativity was presented to the consortium and approved for use in all publications related to the project.
