With the launch of the application process for the FISU Student Ambassadors Programme 2025, we asked current student ambassadors about their experience in this new role.
Meet Diana Barasa, FSA 2024 for Kenya

“As I reflect on my time as a FISU Student Ambassador (FSA) for the second term, the journey has been nothing short of transformative, filled with invaluable experiences, growth, and meaningful connections. My mission as a FSA has been to promote university sports, inspire my peers, and represent the essence of FISU values in my country.”
Monthly webinars
“I am committed to attending all the monthly webinars organised by FISU for us, as they offer unique learning opportunities. One of the most fascinating webinars I participated in was focused on public speaking, a skill I’ve been cultivating for quite some time. To hear from the renowned Chide Idoga, a public speaking coach, was truly a game-changer.”
A unique action plan
“My current action plan revolves around two key objectives: establishing the National FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy and uniting FSA across Africa. By creating this hub, I aim to foster a vibrant network of student volunteers dedicated to university sports and student engagement. In collaboration with Elleen Chebet, this year’s new student ambassador, we launched a website for our federation https://kusf.co.ke. The website’s success is a testament to the power of teamwork and shared vision. Looking ahead, I am excited about the new group of student ambassadors who will become FSA in 2025.”

A key role within her National University Sports Federation
“I take great pride in managing the NUSF Instagram account @kenya_unisports, where we share news, stories, and updates about university sport in our country. My role as a guide to student ambassadors across Africa has been fulfilling. I assist them in developing their action plans and offer support in navigating challenges. Whenever they face obstacles, they reach out, and I’m always happy to help guide them toward success.”
Attending the FISU World Forum

“One of the highlights of my journey at FISU was attending the FISU World Forum in Zagreb, Croatia. I was incredibly fortunate to be selected and funded by FISU for this incredible opportunity. It was an honour to join a diverse group of students and learn from experts in the field of sports. The theme, “University Sport: Creating a Better World”, resonated deeply with me as I continue to believe that sport has the power to unite and inspire change. The Forum was a remarkable opportunity to exchange ideas, broaden my perspectives, and connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about sports and leadership.”
A mentee in the FISU Springboard Programme

“Additionally, I was part of the FISU Springboard Programme in 2024, a mentorship initiative that was truly life-changing. My mentor was an extraordinary guide who helped me grow both in sports and leadership. She shared knowledge and strategies that have proven instrumental in my personal and professional development. I will forever be grateful for the insights I gained through this programme.”
A representative and a volunteer
“In my role as the Female Student Representative for my NUSF, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering in our games and contributing to the success of our initiatives. The experiences have fuelled my desire to continue working with NUSF and to serve as an alumni of the FSA programme, contributing to the ongoing development of university sports.”
Looking back on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had to learn, lead, and connect with inspiring individuals from across the globe. This role has allowed me to serve my country, my peers, and the entire African continent while making a tangible impact on university sports. It has been a journey of excellence, one that I will continue to embrace with passion and dedication.
An official’s perspective: Alfred Rono, President of Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF)

“Our student ambassadors exemplify the true spirit of student leadership and volunteering, taking it to remarkable new heights. Their dedication has not only amplified the voices of students but has also significantly enhanced the visibility of the Kenya University Sports Federation on social media. Through their commitment, they have strengthened student engagement and representation at both national and international levels.
Diana’s participation in the FISU Forum in Zagreb was a landmark achievement for our NUSF, reinforcing the critical role that student ambassadors play in shaping the future of university sports. I strongly emphasise the need for federations to actively support and empower their FISU student ambassadors, as they are key drivers of positive change, advocacy, and global networking. By investing in these young leaders, we ensure a stronger, more connected university sports community that continues to grow and inspire.”
