FISU President Leonz Eder, accompanied by the FISU Summer Games Director Jing Zhao, returned to the vibrant city of Chengdu. This visit marked a continuation of the strong bonds forged during the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games and laid the groundwork for future collaboration.

The FISU delegation members were warmly received by the Governor of Sichuan Province, Ms. Shi Xiaolin, upon their arrival. In a meeting that underscored the deep connection between FISU and Chengdu, the two leaders exchanged thoughts on the long-lasting impact of the FISU Games on the Chengdu city. They also discussed exciting prospects for future collaboration, reaffirming the shared commitment to fostering the development of sports, culture and education in Chengdu, and in Sichuan Province.

“A living and breathing museum”

On the second day, the FISU delegation re-visited the Chengdu FISU World University Games Museum, which has recently been upgraded to include content from the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games. The museum, a symbol of the rich history and spirit of the FISU Games, now also stands as a testament to the success of Chengdu’s hosting. President Eder expressed his admiration for the museum’s transformation, stating: “The museum is not just a repository of memories; it is a living, breathing embodiment of the values that FISU and Chengdu share — excellence, unity, and the celebration of youth.”

President Eder received an award from the Chengdu FISU World University Games Museum for his contribution.

President Eder receives the prestigious Jinsha Friendship Award

One of the highlights of this visit was that the President Eder was honored with the prestigious Jinsha Friendship Award, a recognition bestowed by the Chengdu Municipal Government to foreign individuals who have made significant contributions to the city’s development. In his acceptance speech, delivered on behalf of all awardees, Eder reflected on the profound connection between the award and Chengdu’s heritage.

“As I accept the Jinsha Friendship Award, I do so not as an individual, but as a representative of the entire FISU family. This award symbolises the deep friendship between FISU and Chengdu, and it stands as a beacon of the collaborative spirit that has driven us to achieve great things together”, he remarked, before adding “I am deeply touched by this gesture, and I pledge that FISU will continue to support Chengdu in its journey towards becoming a global sporting hub.”

A visit to the brand new campus

President Eder and the FISU Summer Games Director Jing Zhao also took the chance to visit the impressive new campus of Chengdu Sport University, which has been recognised as FISU Healthy Campus and serves as the International University Sports Culture Exchange Center. The state-of-the-art facilities left a strong impression on President Eder and his team, sparking discussions on further cooperation opportunities that could enhance the university’s role in promoting healthy lifestyles and international sports culture.

Concluding their visit, the FISU delegation was invited to Chengdu TV and Radio Station, where they watched the highlights of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games documentary film. The screening brought back vivid memories of the FISU Games, evoking emotions and reminding all present of the spirit of camaraderie and competition that had defined the event.

A bright and collaborative future

As President Eder prepared to depart Chengdu, he left behind not only the memory of a successful visit but also a promise of continued partnership and friendship. “Together, we have shown the world what can be accomplished when we work together in friendship and unity,” he said, echoing the sentiments of his Jinsha Friendship Award acceptance speech. “Let us continue to build on this success, to nurture the dreams of our youth, and to create a future where sports bring us closer together, fostering peace, understanding, and progress for all.”
