3×3 basketball and football teams win their tickets to FISU University World Cups

Two more days left EUSA European Universities Games 2024 in Debrecen-Miskolc (Hungary). The best student-athletes from the whole continent have been competing in exciting events from 12-24 July.

Eighteen sports, thirteen days of events and all the best student-athletes from Europe defending their university’s colours.

The first champions to be crowned were the 3×3 basketball after an exciting tournament, which serves as qualifier for the 2024 FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball in to be held in Xiamen, China, from 22 to 24 November.

The gold medal of the women’s tournament went to Riga Stradins University (Latvia), with University of Valencia (Spain) taking the silver and Szechenyi Istvan University (Hungary) winning the bronze.

In the men’s event, Polytechnic University of Bucharest (Roumania) took the gold in front of University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania) took the bronze.

Ukrainian and German universities take the football gold medals

Two days after the first podium, it was the turn for the football players to play for medals and, just like for the 3×3 basketball, the matches proved to be very tight. In the men’s final, the University of Wurzburg (Germany) faced the State University of Trade and Economics (Ukraine). After 90 minutes of evenly played match play, the State University of Trade and Economics emerged victorious 2-0.

The men’s bronze medal game was played between the University of Debrecen (Hungary) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), with triumph at the end of the penalty shootout session for one of the host universities of EUG 2024, University of Debrecen.

The final between Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (in blue) and the University of Wurzburg was a really tight one.

In the Football women’s competition, the University of Rennes (France) battled for the bronze medal against the University of Valencia (Spain), with the Frenchwomen finally scoring one more goal (7-6) and securing a spot on the podium.

The final women’s football game was extremely heated between the University of Wurzburg (Germany) and the Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (France). The game went into overtime (2-2), finally crowning the University of Wurzburg after penalty shootouts (2-0). The football competition was highly successful, drawing a large audience and featuring an incredible atmosphere, especially through the penalties shootouts.

Being the champions, both State University of Trade and Economics and University of Wurzburg are qualified for FISU Football University World to be held in 2025 in Dalian, China.


An unforgettable celebration of sport

The European Universities Games (EUG) 2024 are currently being held in Debrecen-Miskolc, Hungary, marking the 7th edition of this prestigious multi-sport event. This year, the Games have attracted 4,700 participants competing across 17 sports disciplines, showcasing the vibrant spirit and competitive excellence of student-athletes from universities all over Europe.

The Opening Ceremony took place in Miskolc, setting a celebratory tone for the Games. Representatives from the International University Sports Federation (FISU) attended the event, including Vice-President Marian Dymalski and Executive Committee Members Agnes Ancic-Valkai, Marko Zunic, and Mehmet Gunay. Agnes Ancic-Valkai also played an active role in the European University Sports Association (EUSA) Forum and Observer Programme.
