Remembering Dr. Janice Harvey

8 January 2024

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that FISU has learned of the recent passing of Dr. Janice Harvey shortly after her 64th birthday.

Dr. Harvey has served on FISU’s International Medical Committee since 1999, where she was additionally the World University Championship coordinator since 2011 and was the Chief Medical Officer at the 1997 Summer and Winter Universiades. Among other sport roles, she was the Chief Medical Officer for the World Curling Federation at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and for the 2004 World Cycling Championships.

In their condolence letter to her family and friends, FISU President Leonz Eder and FISU Secretary General and CEO Eric Saintrond said, “Janice will always be remembered for her numerous personal qualities, her dedication and great professionalism. She was such a wonderful person, and we feel lucky to have had the opportunity to know her and to work with her in her capacity as member of the FISU Medical Committee.”

Her work in sports medicine spanned over 30 years at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Since 1995 she has been an Assistant Clinical Professor and Sport Physician in the Department of Family Medicine at the McMaster University Health Science Centre. She was the first primary care physician specializing in sports medicine to work full-time at McMaster as she supported athletes at the Student Wellness Centre and the Sports Injury Clinic. Additionally, she served as Physician Advisor Continuing Professional Development to the College of Family Physicians of Canada and was previously the President of the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM).

FISU sends its deepest sympathies and condolences to Dr. Harvey’s family.
