Road to Chengdu 2021 FISU Games: discover the Opening Ceremony Venue

7 June 2023

Located in Longquanyi District, which is the core of Chengdu Eastern New Area and the sub-center of east Chengdu, and 12 kilometres away from the Athletes Village, the Dong’an Lake Sports Park Stadium has been expressly built for the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games.

Designed by China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Corp Ltd and completed in April 2021, it is the main venue of Dong’an Lake Sports Park, covering a gross floor area of 120,000 square meters.

The stadium’s overall architectural design is intended to resemble a spaceship, a round shaped “UFO”.

The design team adopted digital methods to create an impressive glazed glass rooftop (the largest in Asia) and China’s biggest canopy made of circular polyester grid membrane. The flying saucer-like canopy is topped with the traditional pattern of the Golden Sun Bird, showing international quality, Chinese style and Bashu ancient culture.

The 50m-high class-A stadium boasts a high-standard VIP reception area and a 29 metres-high, 300 metres-long arc-shaped viewing platform. It fulfills the operational conditions required for opening and closing ceremonies of large-scale activities, sports events such as athletics and football, as well as exhibitions, expositions, commercial performances, TV shows and sightseeing.

After the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games, it will also offer sport facilities to the local population.

From 28 July until 8 August, the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games will boast 18 sports and 269 events.
