Gold, silver, bronze, they are the light of Chengdu

25 May 2023

The medals of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games have a name: “Rongguang” or the Light of Chengdu.

They symbolise the sporting spirit, the ancient Shu culture and the vision of the Sichuan capital, a 21-million people metropolis that harmoniously brings together hi-tech modernity and ancestral traditions.

The medals feature the Golden Sun Bird which is also the theme of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games’ logo. The immortal bird signifies flying to the future and realising dreams, which is in line with the slogan “Chengdu Makes Dreams Come True”.

The medals, designed by a dedicated team from Guojin Gold, show unique pictorial elements and symbols relating to Chengdu from ancient to modern times.

Ms Ying Zhou, one of the chief designers, explains that they are emblematic of China’s 5,000-year-old history and Chengdu’s readiness to, and confidence in hosting the Games. They also express the desire to integrate student athletes from the five continents.

A piece of enamel representing some of Chengdu’s most iconic buildings is embedded in the reverse side of the medals to promote the city’s image of modernity and culture.

“It is with great pleasure that I am able to witness the release of the medals of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games. On behalf of FISU, I would like to send my heartfelt congratulations to Chengdu and I hope that all athletes will be able to see their dreams come true here,” FISU Acting President Leonz Eder said at the official presentation of the medals last March.

From 28 July to 8 August 2023, the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games will feature 18 sports and 269 events, and a total of 269 gold medals will be awarded.
