Germany submits application to host the 2025 FISU World University Games

22 March 2021

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the German University Sports Federation (adh) has managed to compile and submit a comprehensive application dossier for the hosting of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.

It was just one year ago in March 2020 that FISU leadership and staff met with officials and stakeholders virtually to propose the candidature concept. Fast forward one year to 2021, the bid has been officially submitted and is currently being reviewed by FISU.

“Due to the close collaboration with FISU and the very positive signals we have received for our concept so far, we are optimistic that we will receive the honour of hosting the event for the Rhine-Ruhr region in 2025,” said adh Chairman, Jörg Forster (pictured on the right).

The bid itself revolves around many topics, one of which is creating a sustainable and innovative Games that will have a lasting impact by developing the region for years after the Games.

“Together with our partners, we want to organise a sustainable and innovative FISU World University Games that will reflect the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” said Forster. “The 2025 FISU World University Games should provide important development impulses for all areas of German sports as well as the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region,” explained Forster.

Should the bid be successful, adh mentioned that the Games would attract about 10,000 athletes and officials from 170 countries to the Rhine-Ruhr region in July 2025 to compete in 18 different sports organised over twelve days. The FISU Executive Committee will review the application thoroughly and make a decision regarding hosting of the games in May 2021.
