FISU #MascotMonday tournament starts today!

16 November 2020

FISU is ready to brighten up Mondays with the #MascotMondays tournament! Get ready to meet mascots from previous winter and summer editions of the FISU World University Games, and then vote for your favourites.

Every Monday, we will present a match-up between two FISU WUG mascots on our social media channels. FISU audiences will then have a chance to vote to choose the winner every Monday on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

There are eight mascots in the fray going for the title:

Belluno 1985

Edmonto 1983 (WUGIE)

Sapporo 1991 (SAPPY)

Buffalo 1993 (THE BUFFALO)

Strbske Pleso 1987

Krasnoyarsk 2019 (U-LAIKA)

Kazan 2013 (UNI)

Taipei 2017 (BRAVO)

Each #MascotMonday, two mascots will go head to head on our social media channels and voting will last 24 hours on our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages.

This week, Wugie the owl from the Edmonton 1983 Summer Universiade takes on Sappy from Sapporo, Japan in 1991.

Sappy depicts a Yezo deer which lives in extreme climatic conditions in north Japan. The name was solicited publicly and “Sappy” was suggested by a housewife from Fukushima.

Wugie is an owl with a graduation cap, representing the wisdom gained from education! Wugie was the first ever mascot of the Summer Universiade and also marked Canada’s debut of hosting the World University Games. Wugie has also met royalty, as he was joined by none other than Charles, Prince of Wales at the opening ceremony!

Head over to our Instagram, Twitter or Facebook pages to vote now!
