Belarus looking forward to World University Canoe Sprint Championship

23 March 2020

Even as the sports world is at a standstill for the moment, everyone is looking forward to the calendar in the second half of the year, as events start taking place again. One of the most awaited World University Championships of the year is the WUC Canoe Sprint, which is scheduled to take place in Zaslavl, Belarus, from 21-23 August 2020.

The much-lauded National Center of Olympic training for rowing will be the competition venue. More than 400 representatives of university sports from 24 countries will participate in the Championship. Already registered as teams from Australia, Argentina, China, Cyprus, Spain, Estonia, France, the UK, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Ukraine and USA among many others.

The home team from Belarus will field 22 athletes. The athletes will compete for 28 sets of medals.

A friendly raccoon named Zheuzhyk has become the official mascot of the Championship. Zheuzhyk was named after a Belarusian mythological character – the patron of the rivers. He symbolizes the benevolence and jovial nature of the Belarusians. As a patron of the rivers, he deals well with all water-related activities. The raccoon will inspire strength, dexterity and speed among the participants of the championship!

Belarus is an experienced host of FISU World University Championship events. The 6th World University Canoe Sprint Championship was also held in Zaslavl in 2014, and the 4th World University Speed Skating Championship was held in Minsk in 2018.

The World University Canoe Sprint Championship will be co-organised by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, Sports and Tourism Ministry of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk Regional Executive Committee, Minsk City Executive Committee, the Republican Centre of Physical Education and Sports for Pupils and Students, the Belarusian Canoe Federation and the Belarusian Association of University Sports.
