Media accreditation now open for the University World Cup – Football!

4 October 2019

JINJIANG – With just over six weeks to go for the start of the first ever Kelme 2019 FISU University World Cup – Football, the accreditation system is now open for international media that will head to Jinjiang, China for the inaugural event.

Following the success of the University World Cup – 3×3, FISU is all set to launch the University World Cup – Football in November 2019 with the exciting format that brings the world’s best university teams together, competing for the title of World University Champion.

FISU’s newest event has been in the works all through the last one year, as more than 20 universities from 15 countries earned their places in the field through five continental qualifying tournaments. Taiyuan University of Technology and Beijing Normal University, both from China, received automatic qualification as host nation teams while some teams received wildcards to the finals. Paulista University from Brazil made it into both, the men’s and women’s competitions – the only university to do so.

The team draws for the University World Cup took place in Jinjiang on 11 September 2019, in a glittering ceremony that starred legendary football player Luis Figo. The pool placement of the sixteen men’s and eight women’s teams can be found here.

The event will begin on 21 November with group play in a round-robin format, following which the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages. The winners of the semis will go on to play for the global title, with the women’s winner crowned on 30 November and the men’s finals taking place on 1 December 2019.

Known as the South Gate of China, Jinjiang is an ancient-yet-modern city uniquely suited to hosting the University World Cup. With 14 football venues for competition and training, Jinjiang is a city of football and promises to be an excellent host for all the student athletes, media and spectators that will attend.

The Organising Committee invites national and international media to register and be a part of the biggest global university football spectacle ever seen. All of the participating universities and FISU’s member federations are encouraged to invite their national media to cover this inaugural event that is sure to chart a new course in the university sport movement. The online accreditation system can be found here and media accreditation will officially close at 24:00 on 25 October 2019. More information about the event can be found on the official website here.
