Ekaterinburg (RUS),  Postponned

The FISU World University Games heads to Ekaterinburg!

EKATERINBURG IS

A global city that spans two continents, uniting the whole world.

With its unique geographical position on the border of Europe and Asia, the city occupies a special place on the world map. Contemporary Ekaterinburg is rightfully proud of its history and achievements and makes ambitious plans for the future.

These plans are fueled by the city itself, one of Russia’s most vibrant educational, industrial, scientific and financial hubs. Long term, look for innovative, high-tech industries to play an even greater basis in the city’s economy.

It’s no wonder then, why on the eve of the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade, the FISU Executive Committee selected Ekaterinburg as the home for the 2023 edition of the games.

With a 23-0 vote, the FISU Executive Committee announced Ekaterinburg as the host city for the 32nd Summer Universiade.

“Officially we make the decision to attribute the Summer Universiade 2023 to Ekaterinburg. Congratulations,” said FISU President Oleg Matytsin.

PALACE OF TEAM SPORTS
In its bid, Ekaterinburg presented itself as a “compact hub” where all 18 sports programs would take place across a total of 28 venues, with 20 of the venues currently active. Out of the eight anticipated venues, only one would be purpose-built for the Summer Universiade.

Ekaterinburg has hosted numerous sporting events and was also one of the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In addition to the 15 compulsory sports on the Summer Universiade programme, the city’s choices of boxing, rugby sevens, and sambo were approved for inclusion at the 32nd Summer Universiade.

Ekaterinburg will be the third Russian city over a 10 year period to host the Universiade. Kazan hosted the summer edition in 2013 and  Krasnoyarsk was home to the winter version earlier this year.

The total number of students attending these higher education institutions in various formats amounts to approximately 200,000 students. A number of local scientific schools achieved international recognition.

VOLUNTEERISM RUNS IN EKATERINBURG’S ROOTS

The Ural Federal University contributes a lot to the development of university sports in Russia as well as to the development of volunteer movement. The Ural Federal University’s volunteer centre participated in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, and the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk. Moreover, the Ural Federal University’s volunteer centre was used as the basis for creating a volunteer centre for the 2018 FIFA World Cup’s games played in Ekaterinburg.

The city’s and its residents actively support the sports activities at every level.
