Sailing long the historic Napoli waterfront made for one of the more iconic events of the 30th Summer Universiade
It’s goodbye from Napoli for the UniRoos.
184 of Australia’s best elite student-athletes from 65 Australian and International universities produced medal winning performances, PB’s and season bests over a memorable two-week period.
The UniRoos enjoyed their one of their most successful Summer Universiades, coming away with 17 medals – six gold, five silver, six bronze.

There were some exceptional performances from athletes across the 15 sports in which the UniRoos participated.
The athletics team took their performance to the next level winning 10 medals – four gold, four silver and two bronze. This was the best medal haul by an athletics team at a Summer Universiade, doubling the previous record of five medals recorded in 2009 and 2015.
The Australian women’s basketball team repeated their Summer Universiade title from Taipei 2017, vanquishing the USA team in the final, 80-72
Our basketball teams continued their proud record, with the Emerging Opals winning their second consecutive title and the Emerging Boomers winning the bronze, after just missing a spot in the gold medal play-off.
In the pool, our swimmers got the Games off to a fast start, with William Yang (Sydney University) capturing our first gold medal. He was followed by a silver and three bronze medal winning performances.
The men’s foil fencing team defeated the number two ranked Japanese team in a massive upset to make the bronze medal match, finishing fourth overall.
The rhythmic gymnastics team scored 18.800 in both finals’ events, the first time a team from Australia has scored over 18 points in an international competition.
Next up for many UniRoos is a return to study, and a focus on qualifying for Tokyo 2020 and we wish them all the best in these pursuits.
With Napoli 2019 coming to an end our attention now turns to the next instalment, Chengdu, China in 2021 where preparations are already well underway.
