UCU and ISEG to represent Africa at University World Cup finals

The winning men’s team from UCU, after beating ISEGNAIROBI Uganda Christian University (UCU) were double winners African Varsity Basketball Championships concluded in Nairobi, Kenya. The Mukono-based university scooped up both, the men’s and women’s titles.

 

The top two teams per gender qualify to represent Africa at the 3×3 University World Cup in Xiamen, China, from 31 October to 1 November 2019. Therefore, runners up Institut Supérieur d’Entrepreneurship et de Gestion (ISEG) will also be part of the finals in Xiamen.

 

In the men’s final, UCU Canons edged ISEG 14-13 in a closely contested encounter that had the crowd on their feet. The team, coached by Nicholas Natuhereza, had earlier swept aside opponents in the group stages. The UCU Canons team included Isaiah Mabeny Ater, David Deng Kongor, Caesar Adoke and Titus Lua.

 

In the women’s event, UCU Lady Canons defeated ISEG in the final, winning 13-8. Like their male counterparts, the UCU Lady Canons were also dominant in the group stages, before a good contest against the University of Nairobi in the semifinals. The Lady Canons (below) comprised of Maimuna Nabbosa, Rose Akon, Brenda Kayaga and Sarah Ageno. This will be the second time that UCU Lady Canons will represent Africa at the University World Cup after their maiden appearance in 2017.
