Delegations announce their teams for WUC Netball

20 August 2018

KAMPALA, UGANDA – With less than a month to the 2018 FISU World University Netball Championship delegations and coaches are beginning to announce the team rosters of those who will compete at the event on the Makerere University campus in what is expected to be an entertaining tournament.

South Africa will hope to defend the title they won in Miami (USA) two years ago and have listed a strong squad with half of the team made up of students of the University of Pretoria. While there are no returning gold medalists from Miami on the 2018 squad, the defending champions have a right to be seen as a strong contender to repeat as they have two players who have previously represented the national Fast5 team and five former national u21 internationals.

For the host team, with the bulk of team players currently training with the national team for the World Cup qualifiers and East African Community Games, team Uganda will look to do better than their fourth placement in the last edition in Miami, but the USA Team have made their desires known to all, as they chase a WUC Netball title.

The American contingent was the first country to confirm their arrival for the World University Netball Championships in Kampala.

Deborah R. Malac, U.S Ambassador to Uganda, expressed her support for the games.

“Netball is a major sports in Uganda and it is also an emerging sports in the United States,” the American ambassador said. “It is great to see Netball America developing the sports in schools and university level, and we are eager to see its progress. We are excited that the first all American citizen netball team will be participating in the Championship in Uganda and we look forward to welcoming them”.

The World University Netball Championship makes its return to Africa where it started in 2012 when Cape Town, South Africa hosted the event. Burundi, Kenya, Singapore, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia have also confirmed participation.

Netball, a very popular sport in the Commonwealth countries, makes its third appearance on the FISU World University Championship programme in 2018
