WUC Canoe Sprint interview: Learning facilitates good results

10 August 2018

Former world and European champion pentathlete and now Deputy State Secretary for Sport of the Hungarian Government Péter Sárfalvi visited the FISU World University Canoe Sprint Championship in Szolnok on Friday.

According to the sports leader, the event in Hungary is a high-standard international competition and – speaking from his own experience – also told that learning and sport compliment each other very well.

The Deputy State Secretary for Sport gathered positive impressions at the world championship held at Szolnok on Friday. Péter Sárfalvi also highlighted the great number of participants and the outstanding performance of Hungarians.

Péter Sárfalvi (left) during the interview“There is a vast number of entrants, many nations participate in the competition and Hungarians have performed outstandingly so far, as is customary. It is organised at a high level, and I am thoroughly enjoying the atmosphere of this world championship” Mr.  Sárfalvi said.

According to the politician, there is ‘interoperability’ between university sport and the professional domain as there are many Olympic athletes who received huge boosts by their good sport results achieved at the university level. Based on his own example, the Deputy State Secretary said that it was worthy to pursue higher grades of education along with top sport.

“It is untrue to say that one cannot achieve harmony between learning and top sport. As a pentathlete, I had four training sessions a day. I still managed to earn a degree simultaneously. What’s more, my experience was that when I also studied in addition to training results came easier than when I simply focused on sport.”
