Downhill tests athletes at WUC Cycling

Hosts Portugal end with multiple podium finishes

BRAGA — Through dust and high temperatures, the Downhill Race at the FISU World Cycling Championship crowned two more World University Champions. The fourth day’s competition was was held in the area of Armil, Fafe.

 

The circuit began in the chapel of São Salvador and went down 1.28 km. Official practice was held in the morning, followed by the qualifying in the afternoon and then the final.

 

In the female category, the winner was the German Nina Hoffmann, who finished with a time of 2:56.180. Joining her on the podium were two Portuguese cyclists: Daniela Araújo and Ana Catarina Moreira, who were almost three minutes away.

 

In the men’s race, David Martins of Portugal won the gold medal, with a time of 2:32.605, followed by Germany’s Jannik Abbou and fellow Portuguese João Pereira, for whom it was a ‘home’ circuit.

 

The last day of competition takes place in Braga, Póvoa de Lanhoso and Guimarães. The Road Races are the final highlights of the 2018 WUC Cycling on what is expected to be one of the hottest days of the year in Portugal.
