Poland lead the pack with four medals so far

GUIMARAES — Action in the World University Cycling Championship shifted from the city of Braga to Guimaraes on Day 2, in the Sport Park of Souto Santa Maria. The featured event of the day was the XCO-Cross Country which saw more than 40 athletes competing and new University World Champions being crowned. Female cyclists did five laps of the just-over-4km trail, while the men did seven laps.

In the women’s category, the winner was Felicitas Geiger of Germany, who finished the race with a time of 1:02:42. Also on the podium with her, were Dutchwoman Lotte Rosanne Koopmans and Poland’s Gabriela Wojtyla.

“I expected to be on the podium,” said winner Felicitas Geiger after the race. “But I knew three other girls and I knew it would be very hard to win.”

In the men’s race, Belgium’s Erno Mccrae took the gold, with a time of 1:17:04, followed by Krzysztof Lukasik from Poland and Czech Martin Stosek who won bronze.

The medals are individual, but the teams also earn points for their athletes’ performances. After four out of eight events, there are teams that are already standing out and heading towards the top.

Poland leads the lot with four athletes in four podium finishes so far. Germany and Czech Republic are also in the fray with two medals each.
