7th WUC Boxing – Day 4

7 October 2016

CHIANG MAI – The first highlight out of the total 18 matches on Day 4 of the WUC was the women’s light bout (57-60 kg) between Ratchadaporn Saotao from Thailand in the red corner and Nazym Ichshanova from Kazakhstan in the blue corner. Both women fiercely began the fight with quick jabs and crosses trading. Ichshanova then used straight punches to push the Thai away. The match, finally, ended with the victory of Saotao who could land more punches than the Kazakh with the final score of 39-37, 37-39, and 38-38.

Another remarkable encounter was the 7th bout of the day. The men’s fly bout (52 kg) was between Chun-Hsien Jan, boxer from Chinese Taipei and Malik Nahim from France. Although Jan was smaller than his opponent, he had a hold on the round with his strong blows. He actually employed his infighting tactic to avoid the unfavourable middle range attacks from Nahim. Both fighters continued trading fists, but Nahim unleashed an aggressive right hook hitting his weakened opponent before the bell rang, bringing a huge cheer from the crowd. Nahim then dominated the fight and took the clear victory with the final score of 26-29, 28-29, and 28-29.

The 14th bout between Artem Garashchuk, a Russian fighter, and Rakhat Marzhikpayev from Kazakhstan was another vivid game. Both boxers geared up towards one another trading punches. Garashchuk dominated the second round landing more punches. The Kazakh fighter managed to land some, but could not dodge the opponent’s strong combinations. The Russian still dominated the third round beating the Kazakh with the final score of 2-1.

The last thrilled bout was the men’s 91 kg bout between Dylan Brelgeon from France in the red corner and Kenneth Okungbowa from Ireland in the blue. The red, with more accuracy and a bit longer range punches, edged out throughout the game. In fact, Brelgeon threw rapid combinations leaving the Irish boxer a cut in the first round. Okungbowa, on the other hand, could successfully land some counter punches. The French boxer finally took the victory with the final score of 30-27, 29-28, and 30-27.
