TAIPEI CITY – The Universiade torch was first lit and carried up to the highest mountain in Chinese Taipei, Yushan. On September 4th- 6th, 2016, the torch relay team for 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade has successfully reached the peak of Yushan, the highest mountain in Chinese Taipei. Led by the CEO of 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade Su, Li-Qiong, and accompanied by the committee board members, a challenging task of testing the prototype ignition system was accomplished, to ensure that it would be functioning smoothly even under a harsh climate on the mountain.
A height of 3,952 meters above sea level marks Yushan as the highest mountain in Chinese Taipei, and one of the highest in East Asia. The process of climbing Yushan was tough; from preparing mountain climbing equipment, scheduling to physical training, no details should be underestimated. Because of this, Su asked for experience and consultation from mountaineering experts and even led the survey crew herself, giving credits to The Yushan National Park Headquarters, and the Nantou County Government.
The Universiade torch relay global tour will start in May next year, followed by a national relay. The campaign will be expected to travel through all 22 counties and cities between June and August in 2017.
