SEOUL – The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) held a conference with the heads of 21 national sports associations on 4 June at the Korea Press Center.
Each leader represented the national sports associations of the 21 disciplines of the Gwangju Universiade. Officials who attended the conference include the GUOC President Kim Hwang-sik, the Korean Olympic Committee President Kim Jung-haeng, the Korean University Sports Board Chairman You Byong-jin and the FISU Executive Committee member Kim Chong-yang.
The participants shared their plans and ideas for the success of the Gwangju Universiade.
The GUOC President Kim Hwang-sik appreciated the sports associations for their support for the Universiade’s test events and other preparations. He further encouraged them to continue on with their assistance throughout the games.
The Korean Olympic Committee President Kim Jung-haeng said for his part that the associations’ collaboration is critical for the games’ success.
FISU Executive Committee Member Kim Chong-yang praised the Gwangju Universiade preparations for their drive toward ‘Low cost and high efficiency’ by pointing out that Gwangju was the first city ever to try to host an economic Universiade. The GUOC minimized new facility constructions and refurbished existing stadiums for their use in the Universiade.
The GUOC said that it would continue to cooperate with the sports associations in their final preparations including the rehearsals.
The Gwangju Universiade’s 21 disciplines include 13 compulsory sports – Artistic Gymnastics, Basketball, Diving, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Volleyball, Water Polo, Swimming, Judo, Athletics, Football, Table Tennis, Tennis and Fencing – and 8 optional sports – Golf, Badminton, Shooting, Baseball, Archery, Rowing, Taekwondo and Handball.
