8 December 2014

CHIANG MAI – This Monday was the last day of competition of the 4th WUC Weightlifting in the North Chiang Mai University venue of the 4th World University Weightlifting Championship. The first gold medal of the day was taken by Tatarcik (SVK) in the snatch competition of the men’s 105kg ahead of Goh (KOR) 164kg and Elvan (TUR) 161kg. Elvan performed at his best in the clean and jerk to ensure the gold in the specialty and in the total with 202kg and 363kg. Goh with a barbell of 193kg ensured to Korea two new silver medals in clean and jerk as well as in total (357kg). Finally Budek (POL) took the bronze with 192kg of the clean and jerk but left the bronze of the total to Tatarcik (356kg).

In the women’s +75kg, a category which saw in 2012 a world record be beaten, the battle was inequal between the two Thai lifters and the other competitors. In the snatch Pulsabsakul (THA) took the gold medal with a 130kg barbell ahead of her teammate Khenjantuek with 121kg and Arreguin Gomez (MEX) far behind with 100kg. 3rd at the last IWF World Championships Pulsabsakul showed she was a world-class athlete beating Khenjantuek for the second time in few weeks – Khenjantuek finished 4th of the last IWF World Championships. The same logic was respected in the clean and jerk in which Pulsabsakul lifted 161kg ahead of Khenjantuek (156kg) and Chen (TPE) 123kg. The two Thais logically took the gold and silver medals of the total with 291kg and 277kg while Chen took the bronze with 222kg thanks to a strong clean and jerk performance.

The last category of this championship, the men’s +105kg competition, no local lifter was registered. The show was nevertheless present through the winner of the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade, Peter Nagy (HUN). Starting the snatch competition after all his opponents had finished their contest he lifted successively 175kg, 182kg to conclude with a failed attempt at 187kg. He was followed by two Korean lifters Lee and Hwang, both achieving 170kg, Lee taking silver and Hwang bronze at the bodyweight difference. Nagy dominated the clean and jerk with 216kg enough to ensure the gold in the discipline and in the total (398kg). Silver in both the clean and jerk and total were taken by Lee (215kg and 385kg) while Murakami (JPN) took the bronze of the clean and jerk (195kg). Hwang (KOR) grabbed the bronze of the total with a 365kg total.

The 4th World University Weightlifting Championship was finally declared closed by FISU Vice-President Leonz Eder (SUI) and the FISU flag handed over to the 2016 Organisers, the University Sport Federation of Mexico (CONDDE) and the city of Monterrey.
