13th WUC Rowing in Full Swing

 GRAVELINES – The 13th edition of the World University Rowing Championship officially opened on Friday night, 12 September, with the Minister of the City, Youth and Sports, Patrick Kanner.

Place Albert Denvers in Gravelines was decorated with lights to welcome the 335 athletes from 33 countries and the many personalities. Besides the new Sports Minister Patrick Kanner (also President of the General Council of the North), many personalities were seated in the official gallery: Bertrand Ringot, Mayor of Gravelines, Omar Al -Hai , Assessor of the Executive Committee of FISU, Jean-Christophe Rolland, President of the International Rowing Federation, Jean-François Sautereau, FFSU President, Jean- Jacques Mulot, FFA President and José Savoye, President of CRSU Lille-Nord Pas de Calais an d of the Organising Committee of this 13th WUC Rowing. The Minister, all to the delight of French victories in the Davis Cup he had witnessed earlier in the afternoon that day, welcomed that “France has once again demonstrated its ability to host international events on its soil” while Omar Al-Hai insisted on the “high quality of work done by the organizing committee to make this championship a success.” The Anthem of FISU, played by the Gravelines municipal band was followed by gunfire from the nearby Arsenal, giving this sunny evening, a real party atmosphere.
