JELENIA GORA – Yesterday, 10 July on the 2nd competition day at the 2014 World University Cycling Championship, the road cyclists came into action. Kathrin Hammes from Germany won the women’s race. Due to the tough weather conditions, the UCI’s judges decided to cut one lap of the race. The women competed on the 65km route. From the very first meters of the race a small group of cyclists took the lead, with two Polish riders, Katarzyna Solus-Miśkowicz and Martyna Klekot. Also the silver medalist of the time trial Kathrin Hammes was present in that group. And these three student-athletes battled it out for the medals. Finally, Hammes won. Second was Solus-Miśkowicz, who is professional MTB cyclist. “I was so stressed before the start, because it is my first start on the road after a two years break. So I am really satisfied with my result “, said Katarzyna Solus-Miśkowicz, a student at The Holy Cross University in Kielce. The winner was also very happy. “Time trial is not my favourite competition, so I hoped today would be better. And it was much better”, a smiling Hammes commented. “It was very good time for me here. I like the place, the mountains. It’s my first time in Poland, I really enjoyed it”, the University of Freiburg student-athlete added.

Men’s Road Race

The men competed on the 94 km route. Few minutes after their start rain began to fall, which affected the outcome of the race. “It wasn’t the longest race in my career, but the weather conditions were really tough. And Sosnówka … It’s a huge challenge to climb this hill, not once, but 6 times”, said Emanuel Piaskowy from Poland. In the beginning Dutch cyclists were very active. One of them, Kobus Hereijgers, had a 40 seconds advantage. However, after 75 km in the race, Czech cyclist Petr Vakoc, the time trial gold medalist from the previous day, took the lead. He left no room to his rivals and pocketed his second gold in Jelenia Góra. Tim Gebauer (GER) finished after him and Emanuel Piaskowy (POL) ended third. He won from Marek Konwa on milimetres.
