TAIPEI – From 27 April to 8 May, a delegation of 33 FISU staff member and CTI-SU members has conducted a 12-day visit to Taipei, host city for the 2017 Summer Universiade, as the 1st FISU CTI Inspection.

Headed by Marc Vandenplas, Summer Universiade Director and John Warnock, CTI-UE Chair, the Technical Delegates for all 19 sports in the 2017 Summer Universiade programme were divided into three groups and conducted in-depth meetings and venue inspections in Taipei. The Organising Committee, together with the local sports federations, has shown the FISU delegates around 70 sports venues in Northern Taipei, namely Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County and Keelung City, and presented their current development of sports organisation plans, as well as venue operation plans.

The FISU delegates were impressed by the preparation work of the Organising Committee, and have given valuable recommendations for their further development. In general FISU was very satisfied with the new venues, such as the Taipei Dome, the Taipei Tennis Centre, as their construction concepts and deadlines fulfil the FISU requirements, while for the existing venues renovation and refurbishment may be needed, especially for the supporting facilities, in order to meet the demand of hosting the Summer Universiade.

Venue Inspection

On 6 May, Taipei City Mayor Hau received the Summer Universiade Director Marc Vandenplas and the CTI-SU Chair John Warnock in the City Hall. During the meeting, both parties highlighted the well-organised work and proactive actions taken by the Taipei OC at this early stage, and expressed high recognition for its efforts. An open dialogue between the two parties allowed a mutual understanding of the organising roadmap of the Universiade preparation.

Apart from sports inspection and meetings, the FISU delegates also took the chance to conduct separate functional area meetings with the Organising Committee to understand the current progress, operation plans as well as the key concerns and challenges. The following topics have been discussed during the meetings: Accommodation, Catering, Visa Policy, Transportation, Media and TV Broadcasting, Information and Communication Technology, Master Plan and Budget, Publication, Uniform, Athletes’ Village, Security, etc.

Venue Inspection

This 1st CTI Inspection was concluded by the final meeting between FISU and the Organising Committee on 8 May. The FISU delegates summarised the key points of inspections and meetings, as well as gave professional suggestions on sports venues, facilities and equipment. They also showed appreciation to the city support as well as the dedicated OC staff to produce such outstanding outcomes. The Organising Committee reaffirmed the commitment of the authorities to ensure every effort is not spared to make the 2017 Summer Universiade a success.
