Reaching the Final by a First Try

13 July 2013

Abigail DzamesiKAZAN“It’s the first time our group has run together,” says Abigail Dzamesi, one of the four female Ghanaian 4×100 runners who currently studies at Ghana University.

While other groups need years of training, the athletes from Ghana reached the final only by their first try. That may be partly due to their experience in athletics. Dzamesi, for example, used to run as well the 400 meters, but she made the switch to the 100 meters a few years ago.

“I wasn’t really good in the 400 meters, so I decided to switch to 100 meters, because that suits me better.” Nonetheless she didn’t reach the final in that discipline. But she is only 20 years old and has obviously still potential to grow.

The reason why Dzamesi, out of the four girls, is running as the last one is because she is the fastest of all of them. “We didn’t get to pick ourselves, it’s the coach who takes those decisions”, she says.

Dzamesi, only 155 cm tall, knows how to stand up in this big world. Achieving those great results at her first Universiade is undoubtedly encouraging for her future.
