4 July 2013

Luke HancockKAZAN- The 27th Summer Universiade will officially begin on July 6th with the Opening Ceremonies. Over 12,000 athletes from more than 160 countries will march into tomorrow with each country proudly displaying their flag leading their delegation into Kazan- Arena Stadium. Delegations start to announce their flag bearers and so did the USA naming basketball player Luke Hancock as their official Flag Bearer. Hancock plays forward at the University of Louisville.  Hancock was selected out of over 280 athletes from 18 different sports on the USA Team.

I am very proud. I am not sure exactly what to expect, but I am looking forward to the opportunity. Said Luke Hancock. I’m honored to lead the way for the U.S. I’m excited.

Hancock is a more than just a standout Forward for Louisville but was voted Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 Final Four leading the Cardinals to an NCAA Championship. In the National Championship game against Michigan, he totaled 22 points, three assists and two steals, hitting all five of his three-point attempts. He had 20 points and four rebounds against Wichita State in the national semifinals.

On June 24th, Hancock’s dad, Bill, died of cancer. It was just days before the Universiade team would be chosen. Luke made the choice to pay tribute to his father’s memory by coming to Kazan to play basketball for his country.
