Team USA made an inspection visit to Sweden for the WUC in American football 2014

F.l.t.r.: Josef Åhman (SAIF Secretary General), Jason Sarkies and Martin Söderberg

UPPSALA The representative from Team USA, Jason Sarkies, paid Sweden and Uppsala an inspection visit last week to check out the facilities for the players in next year’s inaugural World University Championship in American Football. American Football is a new sport on the FISU sports programme and it is the first time a WUC is to be played. Earlier this year in Uppsala the first official international game in American Football was played, a game between Sweden and Great Britain which was won by the latter 41-21.

Martin Söderberg, the project manager for the event from the hosting club Uppsala 86ers, showed Jason all the arenas, training facilities, hotels and other venues necessary to host a team like USA.

Jason was pleased with what he saw. “Uppsala is a great city to host the first World University Championship in American Football. Uppsala has a large airport in Arlanda, just 20 minutes away and the proximity to Stockholm, just 40 minutes away by train, makes it an attractive city for a championship. I am impressed with what I´ve seen concerning the facilities, they are more than sufficient for our American team when it comes to games, training and accommodation and the OC has shown me a great deal of hospitality”, Jason concluded.
