12th WUC Badminton: Host keeps gold in Korea winning Team Gold

GWANGJU – KOR grandly grabbed the 12th World University Badminton Championship’s title in the team competition. The new champion of this year’s Championship, KOR, won the game with a clean 3-0 game points.

The team competitions lasted until November 8th, 2012. CHN, JPN, KOR and TPE got the ticket to the semi-finals in the morning. CHN, the champion of the 11th WUBC, beat JPN by 3-1 in the semi-finals round. KOR, the badminton powerhouse in Asia, smashed TPE by 3-0. KOR put up good games against TPE in the Mixed and Men’s Doubles.

In the afternoon, the final match to determine the champion featured CHN and KOR. The interesting game of the team event was the Men’s Single between Houwei Tian (CHN) and Lee Dong Keun (KOR). In the first set, CHN had the game with a score of 21-9. But the game drifted to KOR’s side as Lee caught up Tian and won the 2nd set by 19-21. In the last set, the two players struggled for a long time, seesawing the points. Eventually Lee won the set, making the score points of 20-22. Their march for victory did not just end in the Men’s Single as they continued to grab the gold medals in the Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles.

At the end of the day, KOR embraced their successive champion in the team competition. The silver medal went to CHN, and JPN and TPE shared the bronze.
