BUCS Big Wednesday

LONDON/LEEDS – British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is pleased to announce a brand new event which will bring together 14 university team sport championship final matches all in one day at one venue; BUCS Big Wednesday. Leeds Metropolitan University will host the first ever BUCS Big Wednesday on 20th March 2013 which will include the men’s and women’s BUCS Mars football finals, BUCS hockey finals and BUCS netball final.

The 14 sports consist of team finals in Badminton, Basketball, Indoor Cricket, Fencing, Football, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Rugby League, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball. Leeds Met were successful in their bid, supported by the University of Leeds, to host the first ever BUCS Big Wednesday and will provide top class facilities and venues.

Sally Nickson, Head of Sport at Leeds Metropolitan University, said: “I am delighted that Leeds Met has been awarded this years’ prestigious BUCS Big Wednesday event. In our inaugural year as hosts we will endeavour to provide the facilities, atmosphere and occasion that we hope will make this a truly memorable event for all competing athletes and supporters.”

BUCS Big Wednesday has been created to bring together the finals of some of the most fiercely contested sports in the BUCS programme. The event will provide a multi-sport environment on a single campus allowing spectators and competitors the chance to watch all different types of sport across the whole day. The event also incorporates the Trophy Finals across 12 sports the day before, providing two days of top quality action.

Head of Sport Programmes at BUCS, Mark Brian, said: “The new event will provide two days of intense nail-biting sport. The BUCS Big Wednesday will highlight the best teams currently in the university sector, and in some cases incorporating the best individual players in the country, showcasing what university sport has to offer. We look forward to working with Leeds Met and the University of Leeds to make the first ever BUCS Big Wednesday a spectacular event”
