2015 SU Update: Meeting with Relevant Organizations

5 October 2012

GWANGJU – The 2015 Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) had a meeting with representatives of relevant organizations involved in the preparation of the 2015 Summer Universiade such as the Gwangju city government, Gwangju Office of Education, local universities and volunteering centers to encourage their active participation and cooperation for a successful hosting of the 2015 SU.

The GUOC had a briefing on the preparatory work on the operation of a Volunteer School to train 120,000 volunteers and held an in-depth discussion on mutual cooperation necessary to run the educational & training program.

Secretary-General Yoon-suk Kim said in his remarks, “The 2012 London Olympic Games were very well received at home and abroad thanks to committed volunteers. Therefore, it is obvious that the success of the Universiade depends on volunteering work.” He also asked full support and involvement from local universities, Gwangju Office of Education and volunteer centers in the project of training 120,000 volunteers by 2015.

All representatives insisted that they will actively get involved in creating a new history of the Universiade. They pledged that they will work together to make Gwangju Universiade the most successful one throughout the FISU history.

To ensure that OC secures well-trained volunteers and promotes the Universiade to become not only a university students’ sporting event but also a citizen’s festival, OC will launch a Volunteer School project, jointly with local universities and the education office, and volunteer centers.

The OC will sign a MOU on volunteer recruiting and training project with relevant organizations in mid October. OC will develop tailored training programs and make an instructor pool to provide high quality programs and lectures based on the MOU. Different incentives will be offered to encourage volunteers to participate in the Universiade.

The Volunteer School will start from January 2013 and continue to June 2015 according to the work plan.
