4th WUC Shooting Sport – Day 2

6 September 2012

Men’s Podium Team Trap

KAZAN Today, Thursday September 6th, men’s Trap individual and team medals were awarded at the Sviyaga Shooting Complex in Kazan where 4th World University Sport Shooting Championship is held.

The Russian team, with Denis ZOTOV, Viktor VASICHKIN and Maksim SMYKOV on its roster, won the team event with a total score of 347 points. The teams of Cyprus and Italy gained 346 points each, but the Italians grabbed silver because of a slightly more successful performance in the fifth stage (71 points, while Cyprus scored 70). Then go the United States (341 points), the Czech Republic (339), Poland (332), Slovakia (330) and Kazakhstan (320).

Andreas MAKRI (CYP) had a good chance of winning an individual event, but he finished third after losing the second place in a shoot off to Brian BURROWS of the USA. Italian athlete Valerio GRAZINI topped the podium. The Russians were not so lucky. Denis ZOTOV, the best shooter in the Russian team, finished only fourth. The team spirit of the Russians turned out to be more powerful than individual.

Skeet competitions will start tomorrow, September 7th, Day 3 of the championship. Men will have three stages of qualification (75 targets), and so will the women. The six best female athletes will compete for the individual tournament medals in finals in the afternoon.

The Russian women’s team won the gold medals in the Rapid Fire Pistol team event adding another gold to the country’s total tally on Day 2 of the 4th World University Sport Shooting Championship in Kazan. Ekaterina KORSHUNOVA, Liubov YASKEVICH and Alena SUSLONOVA climbed the top of the podium with a total of 1,705 points as they finished first in a tight struggle with shooters of South Korea (Ji Hye KIM, Ye Sol PARK, Yu In BAE) with 1,701 points and Mongolia (Bayartsetseg TUNURCHUDUR, Gantuul TAIVANBAATAR, Enkhzul DAVAASUREN) with 1,686 points.

Russian Ekaterina KORSHUNOVA also took the second place in the women’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol final. KORSHUNOVA fired 771.5 points yielding only to South Korean shooter Ji Hye KIM (778.1). Bayartsetseg TUNURCHUDUR of Mongolia (770.6) won the bronze medal. Another Russian, Liubov YASKEVICH, could have made it to the podium as well. She had occupied the second place by the last stage of the finals, but her unsuccessful performance moved her down to the sixth place. “Unfortunately, today was not my day. I lost because of my own mistakes, although I did not have any motivational problem. Well, I’ll just have to continue working. I enjoyed taking part in the university championship. Kazan has the great shooting complex, and the championship went great, I think”, said the London 2012 Olympic athlete.
