Glamorous Opening Ceremony as pickup for the WUEC

AACHEN With an impressive and diversified Opening Ceremony at the Soers in Aachen, the 10th edition of the FISU World University Equestrian Championship officially started. The audience witnessed a colorful program with many different show acts at the Deutsche Bank stadium.

About 2,000 spectators experienced the march pass of 150 riders from 26 nations. After that Dr. Verena Burk, president of the organization committee, thanked especially volunteers and staff. With the traditional opening words “I hereby open the WUEC in Aachen”, Ute Schäfer the minister of family, children, youth, culture and sports of North Rhine-Westphalia opened the WUEC.

The following show offered a wide variety – from music to dance and acrobatics till equitation. With great enthusiasm the audience saw a musical performance by vocal student Lisa Solovyova from the University of Cologne, department Aachen. With “Euphoria”, the winning song of this year´s Eurovision Song Contest, she kicked off the presentations of the Aachen university sports groups from the RWTH and the FH after the protocol part. According to the motto “Ride here, ride now” the horses took the center stage then. Whether show jumping, dressage or vaulting – everybody´s taste was satisfied. Even dancing and riding can be combined, as Ana Ayromlou and Oliver Jubin showed with the “Dance of Passion”.

The final element of the big Opening Ceremony was the comeback of Kai Vorberg. The World- and European champion returned on his stallion Sir Bernhard RS von der Wintermühle, to the Aachener Soers where he won the vaulting competition of the CHIO in 2006. Together with Lukas Klouda, Miro Rengel, Justin van Gerven he performed “Masterful Moments” in his vaulting show to a medley of Robbie Williams’ songs.

With clapping and enthusiasm the audience at the Deutsche Bank stadium said goodbye to the protagonists of the Opening Ceremony. Hopefully the coming days of the 10th WUEC in Aachen will be as great as the first.
