Honduras will host the XIV University Games of Central America and the Caribbean in 2013

TEGUCIGALPA The Central American and Caribbean Organization of University Sports (ODUCC) and The Honduran Association of University Sports launched the XIV University Games of Central American and the Caribbean, to be held in Honduras in September 2013, 22 to the 28.

University athletes under 29 years old previously selected by public education institutions and regional members of The Central American and Caribbean University Organization of Sports, will gather in Tegucigalpa (the capital of Honduras) to compete in eleven sports governed by international regulations: basketball, soccer, swimming, athletics, chess, volleyball, karate, taekwondo, handball, football and table tennis. About 1,200 athletes will compete for a week in the largest university sports competition in the region.

The launching ceremony of the sports tournament, held in the Manuel Bonilla National Theater, was chaired by Sonia Stapf (President) and Sergio Ramirez (Treasurer) of The Central American and Caribbean University Organization of Sports, Julieta Castellanos; the President of the Organizing Committee for the Games, and Clovis Morales; the President of The Honduran Association of University Sports. The aforementioned dignitaries offered key statistics and information regarding this sports competition for students to the special guests and media that attended the event.

Cultural programme

“For sport in Honduras and the country’s universities it is an honor to host the XIV University Games of Central America and the Caribbean that will take place next year. We will have the opportunity to enhance the competitive spirit of athletes, unite the delegations from the different countries of the region and to promote sportsmanship as one of the most decent human qualities” said Clovis Morales.

The Organizing Committee for the Games to be held in various university campuses of Tegucigalpa is formed of the President of The Honduran Association of University Sports and Rector of the Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), Julieta Castellanos, the Rector of UNITEC, Luis Orlando Zelaya, the Rector of the National Pedagogical University Francisco Morazán (UPNFM), David Orlando Marin and the Rector of the Catholic University of Honduras (UNICAH), Elio Alvarenga.
