12th WUC Chess in its Starting Blocks

GUIMARAES – The 12th World University Championship of Chess is about to start. On 19th August all the participants took part in a technical meeting to establish all the rules of the tournament and to be introduced to the major names of the organization such as Eugen Fleischer, chair of FISU Chess Technical Committee, Kadirhan Sunguroglu, member of FISU Medical Committee, Geoffrey Borg, FIDE, Fernando Parente, Secretary General of Organizing Committee and Carlos Dias, member of Portuguese Federation of Chess.

In the meeting Eugen Fleischer said that the competition will be constituted by nine rounds starting on 20th august and ending on 26th august. Eugen Fleischer also remembered the participants that electronically devices and conversations during the games are forbidden. Fernando Parente explained that the competition will have representatives of 17 different countries, 37 male competitors and 19 female. Dr. Kadirhan Sunguroglu alerted the athletes that during the week anti-doping tests will be made to prevent uncomfortable situations during the competition.

Three representatives of the participants were invited to join the Chess Technical Committee. One person from China, host country of the last Universiade, one from Poland, host country of the next World University Championship and one from Russia, host country of the next Universiade.
