9th WUC Archery – Competition Update

Recurve Mixed Team ESP vs ITA for bronze

CÓRDOBA – There is no doubt that weather has been optimum in Córdoba at the 9th World University Archery Championship, so concentration might have been adequate, but this does not mean that nerves were not present.

QUALIFYING INDIVIDUAL ROUND

Compound Bow Competition

In the women’s individual competition USA and Germany have maintained their position as favourites in the use of the compound bow achieving first and third position, respectively. It came as a surprise the second position of the Malasian team.

On the other hand, France has not been able to show all its potential, for it has obtained 10th and 13th positions despite the quality and experience of its archers.

In the men’s categories, and breaking with USA traditional first position, it is essential to mention Paul Tischer (Germany), whose first position has demonstrated his well-trained control of the bow, as well as F. Javier Valverde’s fifth position. As expected France, Italy and Mexico have reached the top positions.

Recurve Bow Competition

Everything happened as expected with Korea’s women’s team leadership followed by Chinese Taipei, which can be considered an example of quality at sport university level. It is also necessary to highlight the seventh position of Helena Fernández, who has achieved a better score than the Spanish player at the Olympic Games, Iria Grandal.

It came as a surprise not only Antonio Fernández’s fifth position (Spain), but also Jin Jaewang’s (Korea) first place. While Sato Hirokuni (Japan) gained the third position, the French archer Thomas Aubert has obtained the second spot. Despite USA habitual permanence in the first places of the ranking, its archers have not achieved as good results this time as they usually have.

QUALIFYING TEAM ROUND

Compound Bow Competition

In the female competition there are not big differences, it is just important to highlight that Mexico it is not in the top position. The first position has been for USA, followed by Korea (number two) and Germany (third position).

In this compound competition there are just five teams and FISU has decided to give medals to the three first teams, instead of just two as it is normally stated in these competitions. The victory has been for Team USA as we all expected because they dominate this competition at international level. But it is truth that Italy has followed them closely. Mexico has reached the third place.

In the mixed competition a PLAYDOWN was necessary to decide the first position between Germany and USA. Finally it was for Germany. Italy obtained an important third position and it is remarkable that Mexico finished the competition sixth.

Recurve Bow Competition

There were no surprises in the women’s competition: Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan have reached the podium. In the men’s competition, Spain has obtained a surprising third position, before Chinese Taipei, which is remarkable because Chinese Taipei is considered one of the best countries in archery.

In the mixed competitions the ranking was very traditional. This competition, which started at university level, is trying to be an Olympic discipline. Spain has achieved the fifth position this time.

Compound Mixed Team MAS vs MEX for bronze

Compound Mixed Bow Competition

Only Germany, Malaysia, Mexico and USA have resulted winners from the qualifying quarter final round between Germany-Belgium, Malaysia-France, Italy-Mexico and Korea-USA. It has not been until the semi-finals that Germany and USA have grown to currently become one of the favourites in this competition. In fact, they will compete for the gold medal Saturday, July 7th at 5.45 pm in Monte Cronos Stadium of Córdoba’s University.

Mexico on the one hand did finally win the bronze medal when they competed against Malaysia.

Recurve Mixed Bow Competition

At the World University Archery Championship five of eleven teams moved directly to the next round in the so called round prior to the quarter finals (Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Chinese Taipei), while competitions between USA-Mongolia, Poland-Canada and Italy-Czech Republic started.

Korea, Poland and Italy have won from Spain, France and Chinese Taipei without hesitation in the semi-finals.

First and second position will be decided today between Korea and Poland. It will be at the University Stadium of Monte Cronos in Córdoba.

Spain beat Italy for the bronze medal.
