18th WUC Orienteering: Swiss master Sprint

4 July 2012

Women’s Sprint PodiumALICANTE – Today, Wednesday, July 4th, the Sprint distance competition took place in the heart of the City of Alicante from 16:30.

First the competitors were carried to the Santa Barbara Castle, using the elevator. Inside the castle, a quarantine area with warm-up zone and controls was available and pre-start area was placed there.

The terrain for this competition was a hillside of a mountain, with steep slopes, mixing urban areas and parks, which gave to all participants a challenging competition. Indeed, first the race was going down up and down again the castle, threading one’s way through very small typical streets of Alicante, finally reaching the esplanade lined with the sea.

Even if all athletes did their best, we can just but admit that the Swiss team was too strong, winning all three medals in the men’s sprint and for the women, sharing the podium again with Czech Republic.Men’s Sprint Podium

But anyway, all participants were so happy to be there and participating, with the public of Alicante watching this competition with great interest. We especially want to thank Wolfgang Poetsch from Austria and Dusan Vystavel from Czech Republic who helped the Organising Committee by being the speakers of one day at this sprint distance competition, giving the feeling of what is orienteering to all people present, giving intermediate results and commentating on this event in direct, one volunteer from the Organising Committee making the translation for the public into Spanish.

Wolfgang Poetsch and Dusan Vystavel We take this opportunity to thank all volunteers of this World University Championship who make everything possible to make of this event a success.
