CAPETOWN – Yesterday, July 2nd, the opening ceremony of the first World University Netball Championship took place in the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town.

This first edition was set up by the USSA, the South African Federation of University Sports. This sport is very popular in the Commonwealth, eight countries from three continents responded positively to the invitation of the organizers. This championship is a first on many levels because it is also the first time an American netball team was set up and is participating in an international event.

The last day was devoted to working meetings with the organizers and the general technical meeting. The latter was led by the FISU Technical Delegate for Netball, Helene C. Botha, who has done a remarkable job in making this championship a success. Louis Nel, Secretary General of the USSA worked closely with FISU CIC delegate Dele Akpata to accredit all delegations.

He then invited Ms. Sumayya Khan, Deputy Director-General – Sport & Recreation South Africa to declare the championship open. On behalf of President of USSA, Ms Mimi Mthethwa, President of the National Federation of Netball South Africa, welcomed the students.

At the end of the ceremony just before the cultural program, there was the traditional candle lighting which is an important symbol in international netball competitions. Here we must thank IFNA for its support and involvement in the development of university netball.

The ceremony was followed by the national netball final that saw the victory of the team from the University of Victoria.
