University Sports Celebration during Portuguese Finals 2012

PORTUGALFrom 14 to April 22, Braga and Guimarães received the final stages of the Portuguese University Championships 2012, an organization signed by the University of Minho Students Union. This is the biggest university sports event in Portugal that involved more than 2,500 participants, including athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and organization.

Handball, Basketball, Futsal,Rugby7s and Volleyball in both genders and Football 11 men’s, met their Champions and consequently the teams that will participate in the European Universities Games 2012, next July in Córdoba.

Among the favorites, was proved the superiority of teams like men’s handball of AAUM/University of Minho, European Universities Champion 2011, which was the 4th consecutive year winner in Portugal. Also, the AAC/University of Coimbra, EUC champions in women’s Rugby7s in 2011, was the Portuguese champion the 4th year in a row.

In men’s and women’s volleyball, the AAC/UniversityofCoimbraand the AEFMUP/Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto, respectively, repeated the title won last year.

Indoor rock climbingIn Futsal, the men’s team from AAUM/University of Minho won the third consecutive championship and AAC/University of Coimbra, recovered the first place on the women’s podium, after their 2nd place last year.

This was also a year of firsts in the history of the Portuguese podium. The AAUAv/University of Aveiro was the winner in women’s handball, theUniversityofPortowas stronger in the Rugby 7s male and the AAUM/University ofMinhodribbled up the title of champion in men’s Basketball.

In women’s basketball, the AAUAv/University of Aveiro destroyed the dream of its opponent, Polytechnic of Porto, in completing the 4th championship, and won the title after 7 years of absence on the first place. In men’s football the AEFADEUP/Faculty of Sports from University of Porto debuted as number 1.

For the first time the rink-hockey women’s tournament was staged, where the University of Porto won. Also in the men’s competition, this team took 1st place.

During these days, theUniversityofMinhoalso received Individual National University Championships of Taekwondo, Climbing and Athletics. The last one with more than 230 athletes, and, after almost 2 decades the National University Tournament of Korfball, making this event a true celebration of champions, in an extended program of 11 sports, 14 sport facilities, where 17 championships awarded 70 national university titles.
