President Gallien arrives in Taipei

TAIPEI CITY – The FISU President, Claude-Louis Gallien arrived today and was warmly welcomed by the Organising Committee, local authorities and enthusiastic volunteers stationed at the Taoyuan International Airport in Chinese Taipei. This entry port has taken centre stage with arrivals for the 11th FISU Forum stepping up and having the Organising Committee double-focus its attention on this key aspect.

Until today, just over 50 participants from 20 countries have already arrived in Taipei. All the remaining flights are expected to touchdown over the following two days, bringing the Forum attendants to the event before its opening on Monday morning.

Back at the Forum venue in Taipei, the Howard Civil Service International House, the Organising Committee has setup its local office and is currently undertaking the final preparations of the allocated venues for the Opening Ceremony, the workshops and various other meeting rooms.

All this work being developed by the Organising Committee has one thing in common and that is the role undertaken by the volunteers. There approximately 100 volunteers working with the Organising Committee, 90% of which are still university students (the remaining 10% are recently graduated students).

The areas in which these volunteer are assisting the Organising Committee are the accreditation office, the Forum Fair, the sports activities (that will comprise of Badminton and Archery sessions for the Forum participants) and the airport welcome desk team and the hotel lobby information desk. Many volunteers will also assist in the decoration preparations of the main auditorium at the Forum venue, given the high demand for manpower in a short span of time.

Volunteers Ting-Yu Wa and Sze-Hsien Yu

Ting-Yu Wa is a Sport and Leisure Management student in Taipei and previously volunteered at the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung. She is now volunteering at the FISU Forum, assisting at the hotel lobby information desk, stating that “I am honoured to be a part of this event and to have the chance to help people get a good impression of Chinese Taipei”.

Sze-Hsien Yu is a PhD student in Sports Science and is a translation volunteer. He said “It is a great opportunity to improve my English even more. It is a motivating experience and a chance to show Chinese Taipei to the participants”.
