2013 SU Update: Role of Physical Culture and Sports in Personality Development of Students discussed in Kazan

KAZAN – The ‘All-Russian Scientific Conference On Enhancing the Role of Physical Culture and Sports in Personality Development of Students’ kicked off in Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University on November 17th.

The plenary session of the conference saw the participation of Oleg Matytsin, 1st Vice President of FISU and Russian Student Sports Union President; Alexander Parshikov, Director of the Department of Sports Upbringing System Development of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia; Vladimir Leonov, Director General of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate and Ilshat Gafurov, Rector of Kazan Federal University.

The conference assembled over 250 representatives of higher education institutions, among them pro-rectors for educational work, deans of physical culture faculties, heads of physical culture departments, chairmen of sports clubs, researchers in the sphere of physical culture and sports.High schoolPEteachers were invited to participate as well. The conference’s organizers are Kazan (Volga Region)FederalUniversity, Department of Sports Upbringing System Development of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, National Training Foundation.

Among the topics discussed at the plenary session of the conference that proceeded in the assembly hall of Kazan Federal University were physical culture’s educational potential in higher education institutions, challenges and prospects of higher professional education in physical culture and sports.

The conference participants attached special attention to the report on the preparation progress of the 27th Summer Universiade, which was delivered by Chief of Staff of the Kazan 2013 Executive Directorate Larisa Sulima. While doing a review of the construction plan of Universiade sport facilities, she especially emphasized the fact that 18 newly constructed modern sports venues had been handed over to leading higher education institutions of the republic. «In general, the preparations for the Universiade develop a positive attitude towards sports and volunteer activity among students. In addition, thanks to the FISU Flag Relay, the first ever event of its kind implemented in Universiade history, both Kazan students and young people of 16 Russian regions became inspired by these ideals as well», Larisa Sulima said.

After a short coffee break, the conference proceeded with the award ceremony of best higher education institutions promoting healthy lifestyle. The winners for 2011 are Siberian Federal University, National Research Tomsk PolytechniсUniversity and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.

The following workshops were held at the conference’s venue on Friday, November 18th:Physical Education as Academic Subject:Modern Approach to its Content and Implementation, Educational Potential of Physical Culture and Sports in Higher Education Institutions, Challenges of Training and Retraining Specialists in the Sphere of Physical Culture and Sports.
