KAZAN Fire drills were carried out in the UniversiadeVillage to teach students and staff of the student campus to act in emergency situations. Building 10 was reported to have a ‘fire’ and according to this scenario the emergency team conducted rescue activities, while the ambulance service was administering first aid and superintendants were combating the ‘fire’ using fire extinguishers.

Before starting the fire drill, Chief Officer of the Ministry for Emergencies of the Russian Federationin the Republic of Tatarstan Vladimir Afanasyevgave a masterclass on home safety measures for students.

«Just remember the notorious 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, when terrorists took the Israeli team hostage and later killed them», said Vladimir Afanasyev. «For us it’s important that the UniversiadeVillage team is trained to face all possible challenges, thus guaranteeing a peaceful and safe stay for visitors and participants of the Games.»

«Attention. The fire alarm went off. You must leave the building immediately», the robot voice said monotonously. Dozens of students left the building. In a minute three fire trucks arrived, two of which were equipped with a tanker and one with a 30-metre high fire ladder. According to the fire drill’s scenario, a student got stuck on the third floor of the building as he got surrounded by fire. With the help of an abseil fire escape system the fire squad rescued the boy from the building ‘on fire’.

«The abseil fire escape system helps to render a quick evacuation in emergency and doesn’t require special training», said Alexander Firsov, Сhief of the Civil Protection and Emergency Headquarters of the Universiade Village.

A volunteer fire squad made up of students of Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University took an active part in the fire drills as well. On a monthly basis they hold meetings with Universiade Village residents and tell them about safety measures that should be observed at the student campus and emergency response plan.

As Universiade Village Mayor Farid Abdulganiev explained, such emergency drills are held in the student campus regularly. «Our main goal is to prevent emergency situations and train Universiade Village residents and staff work together in case such situations emerge.»
